Message transforms

Providers disagree on details: whether the system role exists, how many messages may be empty, how tool results are shaped. The gateway normalizes these differences so a single request shape works across all of them.

Prompt compression

When a request exceeds the target model's context window, older middle messages can be compressed so the request still succeeds instead of failing with a context error.
